Beautiful Experience, but plan ahead!

It is a long drive from San Juan, pack your dinner to go! Expect to get wet to the waist so bringing a change of clothes for the ride home will keep you more comfortable, also water shoes are recommended. There is a bathroom when you get to the launch point so you can change (bring your own tp). It’s not really possible for kids, the channel through the mangroves is narrow and it’s pitch black, you need to be able to kayak. The guides were awesome and it was a beautiful experience I will never forget!
Do not book-not worrh it

This was a complete waste of money. First off, you are traveling via van and kayaking for the whole excursion. You soend 5mins seeing the bioluminescent plankton…5mins! The whole point of the excursion was to experience it. I would have been better of spending $45 for a 2.5hr kayak ride instead. Then it says that the tour is from 6:15-11pm, which I thought was a good amount of time especially for $100. No…they cal you the day of to let you know that you have to be ready by 3:45pm. That’s pretty much a half day excursion and it should be noted in the details portion. I would have never booked it if I knew this. I asked for a partial refund and they denied it. Do not waste your time with this unless you are satisfied with paying $100 for a 5min experience.

Great experience, wrong tour company.

I highly recommend the experience but not the tour company. The tour guides were great, but you are only going to spend about 5 minutes in the lagoon because they have to get to the next group coming through. It was several hours of waiting for 5 minutes of the bioluminescent experience.
Other tour groups were able to spend a lot more time in the lagoon. I wish I had booked the experience through one of the other companies.

They're serious about the weight thing, and not serious at all about covid precautions. As soon as we got on the shuttle we were the only folks wearing masks even though we chose this experience because it said it was required. When I asked the driver / guide about it he said some people don't want to. Guess we have a different definition of required. They wasted our time by not checking weight until we got there which is ridiculous. My friend who went though loved seeing the glow, I hung out by the bus. Go If you're skinny and want covid.
Wow!!

Our first time kayaking and it was really fun. The tour guides were extremely helpful and with you the whole time, which was very reassuring. Only took away one star was because we returned with a lot of mosquito bites which we wished was mentioned during planning…I guess we should have realized that the bay does that. The tour itself was great. An experience to remember and definitely recommend.
Great experience!

Tour start was delayed almost 40minutes. We were aware of the pitch black areas but it was very dangerous with no lights at all (not even on us). Very disappointing experience- it was a waste of money. Bioluminescence was visible only if you were moving the water with your hands.

The driver and 2 out of 3 guides were pleasant and personable. Be aware that it is an hour drive from the last pickup to the location (our entire process was 1.5 hours) Once you get there they direct you to public bathrooms and then sign the waver. We were then told we needed to wait 45 min. Quick instructions and you are on your way. 30 min paddle is with the current and manageable for beginners. You get to the open water where the bio is supposed to be and it is down here hill from here. It is absolutely nothing like the photos. You put your hand in the water mix it around and see a couple sparkles. That’s it! Then you paddle another 30 back in the pitch dark against the current crashing into trees. Then you have a 1.5 hour trip to your hotel. The entire van had nothing positive to say. Many pulled up the picture on their phones and declared a bait and switch. It was fairly dark so the moon was not an issue. Go if you have tandem kayaking experience and want to go kayaking. Don’t go if you want an extraordinary ecological experience and/or if you have little to no kayaking experience. It is an expensive excursion that takes up 6 hours you’ll never get back. Gave 2 stars for the driver and 2 of the 3 guides.

Not worth the money but fine if you have nothing else to do
Sarah_P
, May 2022
The 30 minute kayak through the river was beautiful. It was pretty buggy but lovely. Might be a better experience at a different time of year. A lot of people recommended Mosquito Bay but takes more planning. This trip was overall not worth the money. It was fine. If you have a positive attitude it is good. But do not expect ground breaking glowing. This was very much a tourist trap
Pitch black
Jamal_P
, May 2022
For us to have kids it would have been nice to know that it was going to be pitch black so parents beware my teenager liked it tho and the dinoflag bioluminescence only worked when we had a tarp over our heads to see them other than that Omar was the best helping us through the struggle of paddling with my 7yr old and Gabriel was funny that made it enjoyable

Magic in the mangroves
Lisa_J
, Apr 2022
The experience of kayaking through the peaceful mangrove canal and emerging into the expansive bay was magical! I loved paddling around the cove as the sun set and then re-learning the constellations. Our guides were funny and informative about the nature reserve and the cool glowing phytoplankton. It wasn’t like Avatar—much more subtle but still a pretty wonder. I highly recommend the early evening tour so your can see the bay at sunset!
We perform checks on reviews
You can only submit a review or rating of an experience to Viator if you were the person who made the booking through Viator. Before publication, each review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information for each of the following criteria: who, what, how, and when. If the system detects something that contradicts our publication criteria, the review is not published. When the system detects a problem with a review, it may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site. In some cases, we will also send you an email asking you to validate your review before it is published. All you need to do is click on the link provided in the email. After publication, our team checks each review reported to it as not meeting our publication criteria. Tripadvisor reviews that appear on the Viator site are subject to the same checks and moderation processes as set out above. It is not necessary to have booked an experience through Viator (or Tripadvisor) to submit a review of an experience to the Tripadvisor site.
