Less than amazing

The best part of the excursion was kayaking in the dark (which is not saying much) The tour was disorganized and they don’t ensure everyone is accounted for. Our group was confused where to go and the kayak trip there and back was chaos. It was 90 minutes with about 20 min at the spot where they plankton light up. Total duration from door to door is approx 5.5 hours. Unless you really love plankton then I would suggest skipping this tour and using your time to do something else.

Dear Chris, We are sorry to learn the tour fell short on expectations and did not had its usual dynamic. Sometimes when we have many unexperienced kayakers the way to and back from the bay can turn challenging. We have experience conducting this tour for many years now, and understand this was an isolated case. We are saddened to know it happened during your tour that day.

Great evening event and well worth seeing. Organisation was a Little chaotic though. Importantly we should have been advised to bring a towel and change of clothes.

Sparkly Water - A Must Experience

I had originally booked the combo tour of hiking in Yunque and then the kayak, but the hike was cancelled due to weather conditions. I was rebooked for the kayak tour the morning of. The communication from the team was great and the rescheduling was great. I was picked up on time and we traveled about an hour by bus to the spot. The guides were great to accommodate and get every situated. I was a solo traveler and was paired up with a guide for the glass bottom boat. I wasn’t given a paddle, which at first was a bit disappointing, but ended up being great in the end. Not having to paddle allowed me to really experience the bioluminescent glow. Manage your expectations - pictures online are prominent in colors and light due to the cameras. So if you go expecting that, you may be disappointed. The glass bottom looked like a million shooting stars. Once in the bay, they covered our kayaks with tarps to show the effects in true darkness. This was great and allowed the phenomenon to really shine (literally). The last thing I would say is to understand your cost. You’re getting picked up from your hotel, on a bus for two hours round trip, and on the water for almost 2 hours in a private park. The price is spot on for what you get. I wish the hike would have happened, but was thankful I got to experience this at a minimum. Highly recommend if you’re going to see it once in your life.

Great Tour Guide, recommend doing this and it was really pretty in the bay and great weather. Not quite what I expected but happy I did it.

This tour was fantastic! It is not in San Juan, however. They bus you out to Fajardo so the time of your tour is actually when you start kayaking. You need to be ready at least 2-3 hours before because they are going to pick you up in San Juan (if you're located there) and drive you to Fajardo. We did not expect that, but it wasn't a problem because our driver Daniel was phenomenal! The tour itself is great. There were parts of the tour that were hard to kayak through if you're not an experience kayaker but nothing too strenuous. Our guides did an awesome job showing us around the area and keeping us entertained. The dinoflagellates are a must see! It was a great experience and I can't wait to come back and do it again!

UNDERWHELMING

This tour had all the potential in the world and unfortunately it fell completely flat. I wasn't worth the price tag of $110 at all, for a bunch of reasons. Firstly, we were told that we weren't eligible to use the glass bottom kayak (that was advertised) at the last minute because my boyfriend exceeded the weight limit (which isn't true.) The trek through the mangroves in our kayak was nice but poorly organized. It felt like you were being shouted at and corralled, not an enjoyable experience. Once we reached the bay, we did get a pretty nice short lived view of the sunset, and waited with our kayaks tied together for nightfall. We were given tarps to place over our heads to be surrounded by complete darkness and then told to splash our hand quickly through the water for a few minutes MAX. Once again, completely underwhelming. Understandably, the plankton that create this natural phenomenon can be unreliable but I also didn't think we were afforded much of an sufficient opportunity to view them., After a few awkward minutes of splashing our hands through the bay, and people asking each other "do you see anything?" we headed back. By now it is completely dark outside, and we must, single file, navigate the narrow mangroves in our kayaks, without light. The only light source being a glow stick tied to the tip of the kayak in front of you. Needless to say, it was less than organized. Definitely do your research when choosing what company to book this tour with and go in with lower expectations, seeing as many of the pictures of the bio bay have been digitally enhanced.

False Advertisements

It definitely wasn't anything close to what we were expecting. They lied about how long of a ride it was to get there and continued to lie in route to the location. Advertised glowing fluorescent water viewed through glass bottom boats/kayaks , when in actuality it was regular 2 person kayaks and the water definitely didn't glow. When you reach the destination after rowing over a mile to get it's such a let down it's angering. The glowing water they advertised is nothing more than flecks in the water that you have to splash to see. Definitely a WASTE OF MONEY! I had to sincerely apologize to my friends who I convinced to come along thinking we would sharing an amazing experience, instead we left with disappointment

This was a physically challenging trip but the staff was fantastic and really helped us learn how to kayak and get through the trip. My husband and I kayaked with kids and remarked this was like a jungle cruise. So cool and special. Worth the trip!

Sunset Kayak in Mangroves and Bay with change of water Bio fireflies

I've title my review this way because this is how the tour should be titled. We went on a nice guided ocean kayak tour in double person kayaks. There is no glowing bay of water that you will see like the photos. If you are over 190lbs then you and your partner (all kayaks are 2 person) do not get to use the glass bottom ones. I wouldn't recommend going solo as you will have to kayak with a stranger.I do not think the glass bottom matters because the water was dark our entire trip and not glowing blue like the photos. The water did light like small fireflies after you vigorously shook it in the dark. We were picked up at our hotel at 4pm and returned at 10:30pm so I advise eating before. It is a long night and you do not kayak very far but more float around. Overall it was a nice experience but expensive for over $100 per per person to kayak.
