Should have been longer

The bay is amazing — night kayaking under a million stars with every paddle stroke illuminating the water — magical. Our group was small (6 people) which was nice, and the guide was good. My main gripe is that the excursion time choices were 7 and 9 pm so we figured we’d have a decent amount of time in the bay. We chose the 7, and we were back at the rendezvous point before 8 pm. After paddling out to the brightest area we were only given 10 minutes to enjoy before paddling back to shore. The total time was just under an hour including the transport by van to and from the bay. It was way too short for no good reason and for the price we paid.

This was a great tour, and I highly recommend! Viator is the booking company for the guides who will take you on this tour. You meet in town and take a van out to the bay. Although you can leave a few things with someone at the van, try not to bring anything you wouldn't want to get wet. You'll be asked to go barefoot. It was kind of smelly at the launch site, but less so on the water. Make sure to book on or near the new moon, or at a time when the moon will not have risen; any light makes it harder to see the bioluminescence. Try to preserve your night vision by not looking directly at any of the guides' headlamps as you paddle out. You'll see the glow as soon as you start to paddle, but the thing that blew me away was seeing the "sparkles" of the organisms in the drips on the kayak, and then in my hands when I dipped them into the water. The bay is very sheltered, so even first time paddlers should have no trouble on the flat water--but it might depend on whether or not the darkness makes them anxious. In short, do it! It was amazing.

The BEST & must DO experience

This was done for 5 of my nieces while in Vieques, PR…. They literally stopped to text me the excitement they were feeling. They praised the tour guide, who is extremely friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. I’ll be doing it next time. in Oct 2022. I was kicking myself for not going on the tour while I was there, but I can’t wait until our next year traditional trip!! Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience (From: Alysia, Anadaia, Monique, Tiara & Trajah) 🙏🏼🥰

Incredible experience worth any discomfort

This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you don’t want to miss! The experience itself is amazing; to know that you’re touching trillions of plankton THAT YOU CAN SEE is mind blowing - and well worth everything needed to get there. Our tour guide, Adel, was fantastic - very knowledgeable about the Bay Area and the biology. That said, here’s what you need to know: you will be going OFF-ROADING to get to the Bay - be prepared for a bumpy ride. Just wear sandals or flip flops because you’ll take them off before you get into the kayak. You will be damp at the least - you feet and calves will be wet. The reason the dinoflagellates are so bright here is because these are perfect conditions for them to grow: it is warm, and they are biological…so there is going to be a natural mucky smell. But still - well worth it!

Yo no volvería nunca

Ahogarse en una bahia de 4 pies de profundidad, donde todo el mundo hace pie, con un chaleco salvavidas es muy complicado, pero en todo caso su experiencia es como para aterrar a la gente. Tampoco sea asi hombre...
