Departure Time

9:00 AM
Discover the natural wonders of Tahiti on this inner-island safari tour by 4WD vehicle. After your guide picks you up from your hotel in downtown Papeete or at the wharf, hop into the Jeep for a thrilling ride — traversing rough roads best accessed by a 4x4 vehicle.

Make your first stop at Mount Marau, a former 19th-century French fortress. Treat yourself to a gorgeous vista of the lush, rainforest-clad Punaruu Valley and snap photos of the island's highest peaks: Orohena, Aorai, Tetufera and Teamaa.

Your tour continues to the Arahoho Blowhole, an unmarked roadside attraction created over eons by liquid lava, when battering surf undercut the basalt shoreline and eroded a tunnel-like passageway. When large waves crash into the rocks, watch in awe as a geyser-like plume of seawater shoots into the air and sprays onlookers.

Check out the local surfers and the black-sand beach before re-boarding the Jeep. You’ll enter to the Faaurumai Valley near Tahiti’s north coast to visit the three waterfalls of the Cascades of Faarumai — nestled in nearly impenetrable rainforest of hutu and mape trees. It’s an easy 5-minute walk to Vaimahutu Falls, which plunges 100 feet (30 meters) into a crystal-clear pool below.

Follow your guide along a 20-minute rainforest walk to reach the other two cascades, Haamaremare Iti and Haamaremare Rahi, and spend time at the final waterfall with a refreshing swim if you’d like. Back in your 4WD vehicle, make the return trip to Papeete where your full-day tour ends.

Beautiful rainforest excursion!

I absolutely enjoyed this tour, we had beautiful weather with plenty of picture opportunities. Our guide Sydney stopped many times so we could get down and explore and take pics. They also make a stop in the middle of the mountain to eat with breathtaking views.

Beautiful day. Wonderful restaurant in the heart of Tahiti. Selection and food better than our resort.

A Worthwhile Way To Spend A Day In Tahiti

Overall, this was an amazing tour! My friend and I got to see SO much of the island. Like others have said, the roads were extremely bumpy, and there were a lot of steep drops that made me incredibly nervous (a bit like an eight-hour ride on a wooden roller coaster), but—also like others have said—it was 100% worth it. Our driver was excellent and extremely careful. When we purchased tickets, we put that we were English speakers (we both speak a little bit of French but not well), and the rest of the group were French speakers. Our guide did first provide information in French, but he was attentive to us and repeated everything in English. The only hiccups had to do with the list of items we were told to bring. The swimming area we stopped at was quite rocky, so a heads-up to bring water shoes would have been nice. Also, when the driver picked us up, he asked if we had brought something for lunch, and when we said no, he asked what we wanted to do about that. The tour description indicated that lunch was not included, but for an eight-hour tour, we figured there had to be a lunch stop somewhere. One of the other people on the tour said she had taken the tour several years ago and mentioned that there was a restaurant at the top of the mountain, which solved the problem, but it would have been helpful if the list of items to bring had included lunch.

Great way to see the interior of the island. Extremely rough ride and you will get wet, dirty and probably bruised! Still worth it! Our guide gave us a great experience.

Wild ride in the mountains

We loved our trip to the interior of Tahiti, definitely a wild and crazy ride with lots of great scenery. It rained on us most of the trip, but that only added to the excitement. We had fun at the grocery store shopping for our lunch items and it was far cheaper and easier than going to the restaurant. We were lucky to have a French-Canadian on our trip so we were able to get a lot more information on the surrounding area and plants translated into English for us. I highly recommend this adventure if you are comfortable standing on the seats in the back of a truck and hanging onto the wet railings.

One of a kind truck ride

We had a good time. I was expecting at least one hike and swim and it turned out to be more like a 8 hour truck ride on a bumpy road. But the ride was fun and papenoo valley was breathtaking. Our guide was also very nice. I just was a little unprepared for what the tour was actually like.

Inner Tahiti, mountains, waterfalls and plants

Eric, our guide & driver, was very knowledgeable about plants. He knew the scientific names, comon English and Tahitian names. What they are related to. What they are used for. When they were introduced to Tahiti. The landscapes are spectacular with thin silver waterfalls descending the cliffs. Craggy rocky formations. We had a swim at a deep pool early on, then lunch at a resort high in the caldera. The road gets rougher as the day progresses. Use your lapbelt. Hairpin turns, mud, boneshaking bumps. He was a safe driver. It was longer than I expected. I got picked up around 930am at my hotel. At 5pm we were still on a dirt road. We emerged 48 km from Papeete. I was last to be dropped off. It was almost 7pm when I got to my hotel. We definitely got our money's worth.

Journey through the center of the island!

The guide: Our guide was a skilled and careful driver, very kind, and great with the children in the group. He picked us up and returned us to our pre-arranged location. Our guide spoke both English and French. The tour: First off - the views of the valley! Wow. It's an extremely beautiful tour of the mountains, waterfalls, rivers and valleys. The tour is almost completely conducted while riding in the back of the tour truck. There are a couple of stops where you exit the truck to take photos, and 1 stop where you exit and swim for 30-60 minutes. However, It did rain during the first hour or 2 of our tour, so it is possible we bypassed a normal stop. By rain, I mean the standard warm soft jungle rain - not bad at all. Also, in our time in Tahiti, we've found very few mosquitos- but on this tour, you're deep in the mountains -bring mosquito repellant- you'll need it. Our guide did stop at a convenience store just before entering the mountains to give everyone the opportunity to purchase spray, snacks, drinks, etc. Lunch is at about 12:00 - you can bring lunch with you or eat at the restaurant located in the mountains where the tour truck stops. Meals were around $15-$25 USD each and included salads, seafood dishes, chicken and hamburgers. They accepted local and USD currency -the credit card machine was not functional at the time of our visit. There was little to no hiking involved in this tour, which is fine because honestly with the distance covered, there would not be much time for it. Like I mentioned above, the roads get very bumpy, so in many areas the truck must move very slowly. Overall, there was less hiking and swimming than I expected, but the tour was incredible: the views were amazing, and the guide very kind, careful and enjoyable.

Eric was our guide. What an amazing experience. He was knowledgeable and told us all about the islands history and nature. Stopped at just right spots for a swim, lunch and waterfall gazing. A “must do”.
