Departure Time

8:00 AM
This Kona volcano tour begins at your hotel in either Kona or Waikoloa, where you board a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle for the journey to Kilauea volcano.

Along the way, stop at the 'coffee belt' in the cool uplands above Kona, and enjoy a cup of Kona coffee on a plantation right where it’s grown. Enjoy a light snack in the cool mountain air, and, if you’d like to pick up some coffee for home or gifts to bring back from Hawaii, buying the coffee straight from the source is a great way to help local farmers.

The tour continues around the south end of the island, where you next stop at Punalu’u Beach Park for a walk down the black-sand beach. This scenic spot on the southeastern shore is known for its Hawaiian green sea turtles, which occasionally haul out and sun on the sands or bask in the shade of a palm.

Upon reaching Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, follow your guide on a short hike through a cavernous, naturally formed lava tube, which is created by the swelling and eventual cooling of an underground river of lava. When you approach the rim of Halema’uma’u Crater, you can see the steam as it rises from the Earth and the hiss of volcanic gas, and as the sunlight slowly fades into night, the crater emits an orange glow from the lava lake deep down inside. Since the temperature toward the volcano’s summit can be a bit chilly at night, enjoy a warm dinner of tasty soup that’s served with bread and then dessert.

Throughout this Kona volcano tour, every traveler has use of an iPad for reading more info about the sights, as well as scouring photos and videos or playing games in the car.

Finally, at the end of the fascinating Big Island adventure, return to your Kona or Waikoloa hotel.

Katie was amazing ! Her knowledge about the island both past and present was so impressive. And her love for the island and it’s people really showed. She has a great eye for finding the sea turtles at black sand beach. Lunch/Dinner were delicious. The Volvano National Park was the BEST!!! She went out of her way to adjust time so we could see the lava glow at sunset.
Awesome tour of the Big Island.

The whole tour was great from start to finish. We were able to see a good number of sea turtles which was great. I loved having lunch at the bakery, I could have stayed there all day it was so peaceful. Then of course the volcano national park was the highlight. Finally the pictures my son took coming down the mountain were epic! I enjoyed talking with everyone on our tour we were a good team. Katie, our tour guide is top knotch! Thanks again Katie!

Great guide poor tour plan too long

Danielson was an amazing tour guide. His knowledge of the island, volcanos, hawaiian history. But the tour was way too long too much driving, cramped and dinner was unnecessary. It should be capped at 10 and maybe do apaka falls instead of kona coffee so far away. We drove an hour for other pickups. 13 hours later....way too long, car sick, bees at dinner but our guide was awesome. Should have done a private tour with him. Loved the lava tubes, craters, peaks

Big Island in a Day
, Aug 2021
Dominik was AMAZING. This tour was well worth the cost. Dominik not only did a great job of making sure the guests were taken care of, but was very knowledgeable about the history, culture, and flora and fauna of Hawaii. The tour is all day, but we learned and experienced so much that I would highly recommend this tour to anyone.
