The Basics

As a highlight of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (and the Big Island as a whole), Kilauea features on just about every sightseeing tour. At the Jaggar Museum and Observatory, you can see steam rising from Halema‘uma‘u Crater and, as it begins to get dark, a glow from the lava lake within. Those craving a more adventurous experience can opt for a guided cycling tour through the national park, hike to the summit of Kilauea, or combine a national park tour with an afternoon of ziplining over the Umauma River.

Volcano was the star
Bruce_L, Nov 2021
Hawaii Small-Group Volcano Experience with Lunch and Restaurant Dinner
The main expectation was to see an active volcano and that was achieved. Dinner far exceeded the usual fare. We did not get as many places as expected but it was “Black Friday” and we lost time waiting. The guide was well prepared and informed.

Very nice experience. Brice was a great tour guy. We enjoyed all the little extras:. Hit towels scented with lavender, table cloth and place mats at our picnic lunch, availability if flashlights and jackets.

Introduction to the Big Island

Hawaii Small-Group Volcano Experience with Lunch and Restaurant Dinner
There was some confusion on scheduling that caused my wife and I a bit of stress and that is the reason I am not providing a 5 star review, but Viator bent over backwards to address the issue. Once we were connected with our tour it was great, with a knowledgeable and articulate tour guide, comfortable transportation, and a great introduction to some of the highlights of the big island. I highly recommend it.

Great Volcano tour by Grant of Kailani Tours Hawaii
Rajeev_K, Oct 2021
Hawaii Small-Group Volcano Experience with Lunch and Restaurant Dinner
Grant is an excellent tour guide who was friendly, witty, considerate, kind and helpful. Well spaced out breaks with nice coffee, bakery and dinner for a stress free outing. He carried a powerful binocular with a tripod to help everyone take a closer look at the lava and take pictures of the dancing flames in the volcano. Safe driver.

The picnic lunch at the coffee farm was enjoyable. Zoe’s narration was extremely good. We enjoyed the Volcano documentary and Jurassic Park movie. The highlight was witnessing a volcano as it erupted; we had perfect timing. Don’t miss the Volcano Tube!

Covered a lot of territory with a knowledgeable guide which means a lot of time in the van. Worth it however-experienced everything in the description including awesome star gazing since the skies cleared right on time.

The tour was amazing. Our tour guide Jim Carrey was very informative and entertaining. My teenage children loved the tour so much that they looked away from their phones all day! Jim made the day extra special.

When to Get There

Plan to visit the park in spring or fall when the island sees fewer visitors. If you’re visiting during peak summer season, arrive at the Jaggar Museum first thing in the morning or late in the evening after the crowds have dispersed.

The Kilauea Visitor Center

To get the most out of your visit to the volcano, especially if you’re visiting independently, make the Visitor Center your first stop upon entering the park. There, rangers can update you on the latest conditions, offer suggestions for the best hikes, and let you know about any special programs or events happening within the park.
